  • Red Alert feat. Jeff Stormer
    Jan 15 2025

Get to the underground bunkers, put on those military issue nylons and lipstick, and brace for impact as Jeff and Emma get into the tonal whiplash between Kubrick’s nightmare comedy Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb and its Cold War serious counterpart Red Alert by Peter George. How do we go from a countdown to the end in a quest for world peace to protecting our fluids from Russians and women? Why is Peter Sellers so many guys? Are you just as capable of being as sorry as I am, Dmitri? Content warnings for Red Alert include: violence, bombings, suicide, death, threat of doom, 60’s-standard outlooks on the world. Content warnings for Dr. Strangelove include: violence, bombings, suicide, death, threat of doom, so much horniness, one goofy Nazi, and a Tim Robinson lookalike. • The Godfather feat. Katharine Coldiron
    Dec 15 2024

A month ago, Katharine and Emma hit the mattresses, but now that things are calming down between the Mafia families of New York they’re here to talk about cinematic masterpiece The Godfather and the extremely trashy novel that inspired it. They get into all of it, from the ten thousand story lines, to the mid-century Italian-American gender essentialism, to just how many synonyms there are for penis used in this novel. And yet somehow, the movie is still (spoiler) a 10/10. Content warnings for The Godfather novel include: Mob violence, domestic violence, racism, sexism, death of a loved one, lots of death in general, death of an animal, and an extremely detailed description of vaginal reconstructive surgery. Content warning for The Godfather film include: Mob violence, domestic violence, racism, sexism, death of a loved one, once again it’s a mob movie lots of death and violence in general, death of an animal, and Al Pacino looking so so hot. • Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter feat. Audrey from Alone at the Table
    Oct 15 2024

Happy Halloween from Unnatural Selection! This month Audrey and Emma face one of the spookiest things known to podcaster: historical fiction from the early 2010’s. Listen along as Emma’s brain full of facts short circuits as the pair tear apart Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith and its 2012 adaptation. We ask questions everyone else is too afraid to, like “Did this even need to be Abraham Lincoln?” and “Was there a single sensitivity reader looking at the slavery plot?” as well as “Hey is that the guy from Mama Mia?” and many more! Content warnings for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter include: vampire-standard gore, racism, slavery, death of a child, death of a family member, death of a loved one, politics, and a shocking amount of actual Lincoln facts. Sep 15 2024

This month on a special episode of Unnatural Selection, join Emma and their partner Greg on a journey along the train tracks to find the adaptation process of Stephen King’s The Body. How did they get the film title Stand By Me? Why is this Emma’s favorite movie? Would Pokémon be the same as we know it today if the adaptation had kept more of the classic Kingian gross-outs? Content warnings for The Body include: death of a child, child abuse, death of a sibling, PTSD, fatphobia, leeches, vivid descriptions of vomit, and a very bitter narrator. Content warnings for Stand By Me include: all of the above, period-standard homophobia, heavy-handed 50’s nostalgia. Additional content warnings for this episode include: discussions of child actors and the common abuses they face, sexual misconduct in Hollywood, and references to drug overdose. • Jaws feat. Marn Lastname
    Jul 15 2024

It’s finally time to cover the adaptation that inspired this show! Set sail on the Orca with Emma and Marn for a nearly two-hour discussion about the beast known as Jaws. Bridge the brief gap between Benchley’s 1974 hit novel and Spielberg’s inaugural summer blockbuster in 1975 with these two podcasters as Marn lets Emma gush about real-life shark footage, Hooper’s affair with Brody’s wife, and mafia subplots. Content warnings for Jaws include: graphic shark attacks, child death, graphic descriptions of sharks being killed, infidelity, mentions of rape and rape fantasy, 70’s-pulp typical nudity and horniness, and insufferable rich scientists. The extra book Emma read for this episode is The Jaws Log by Carl Gottlieb. Emma read the 25th anniversary edition with introduction by Peter Benchley. You can find Emma on twitter @ematsca and the show @UnselectPod. Marn can be found on most social media @corpserevivers. Kat and Emma return to the woods for their annual trek through the Twilight series. This year, listen along to their thoughts on Stephanie Meyer’s New Moon as they muse about terrible CGI, laugh at ridiculous teen behaviors, and restart Team Jacob discourse in the year 2024. Content warnings for New Moon include: depressive episodes, suicidal behavior, abandonment, the murder of a tour group, references to domestic violence, weird racism towards werewolves, insensitive depictions of the Quileute people, and an obscene number of references to Romeo and Juliet. • Dune feat. Tom O'Brien
    May 15 2024

Travel to Arrakis and venture out into the desert for spice with Emma and Tom as they discuss the two-part 2021 and 2024 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune (1965). Neither Emma nor Tom have mastered the voice, so no need to worry about any Bene Gesserit tricks. Just listen along for their takes on adapting a behemoth of a book, Jessica’s evil arc, and a firsthand account of the limited-edition Dune AMC popcorn bucket. Heads up that the audio for this episode has more background noise than usual because it was recorded in person on one microphone. Content Warnings for Dune include: mind control, colonization, violence, assault, religious fanaticism, death of a parent, death of a child, many other miscellaneous deaths, and a weirdly intelligent two-year-old. The articles Emma references in this episode can be found here: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/making-of-dune-denis-villenueve-novel-adaptation-1235052084/ https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-10-21/dune-movie-book-changes-explained-denis-villeneuve https://screenrant.com/dune-2-denis-villeneuve-interview/ https://www.ign.com/articles/dune-part-2-is-a-perfect-adaptation-because-of-one-key-difference You can find Emma on twitter @ematsca and the show @UnselectPod.
