  • 126. Nellie Cashman - The Angel of Cassier
    Nov 12 2024

Cork-born Nellie Cashman emigrated to America and went on to be a total badass, a female prospector, business-owner and genuinely good person. It's a tough time of year and so I decided that for the month of November that I'm going to focus on the fun, ridiculous or downright cool parts of history. Also fairly certain you were traumatised enough in October!

Love listening to Katie

As a history person myself I love listening to Katie. Her informal style and reflections on what happened keep the stories from getting bogged down in facts and allows the events and people to shine in the retelling. Occasionally, she'll leave me wanting more information, for example she might state that a person was cruel without giving examples, and I'll think: but how Katie? Did he beat his wife? Was he oppressive to his tenants?etc. But I also realize she only has so much time to tell a story and some details may need to be left out. If I'm still sufficiently curious when she finishes her story I'll look up more information myself.

I also suffer terrible insomnia and listen to Katie as I lie in bed. The stories distract me from the pain that keeps me awake and sometimes even help me fall asleep.
