"Die Melusine" – ein mythisches Wesen, halb Frau, halb Schlange. Schon im Mittelalter ein viel erzählter Stoff, nimmt sich Universalgenie Johann Wolfgang von Goethe der Sache an und erzählt die Geschichte in seinem Werk "Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre" neu: Ein junger Mann verliebt sich in eine schöne Frau, die aber von Zeit zu Zeit verschwindet, nur einen kleinen, geheimnisvollen Würfel zurücklassend. Welches Geheimnis verbindet die Dame mit dem Objekt? Der junge Mann will dies unbedingt herausfinden.

Quando Schiller invitò Goethe a collaborare alla sua rivista per rispondere alla domanda su come l'uomo possa stabilire una mediazione tra il mondo sensibile e il mondo soprasensibile, Goethe rispose che non poteva esprimersi in termini filosofici, ma voleva farlo con un grande quadro. E contribuì quindi alla rivista con questa Fiaba, in cui fece un affresco simbolico dei mondi.
