Twelve-year-old Donn Fendler steps away from his Boy Scout troop for only a minute, but in the foggy mountains of Maine, a minute is all it takes. Una familia pobre decide vender su última posesión a fin de conseguir unas cuantas monedas con las qué comer: su vaca. Jack, el hijo, se encuentra con un hombre misterioso en el camino hacia el mercado, quien lo convence de intercambiar la vaca por tres habichuelas que, dice, son mágicas. Jack acepta el intercambio y vuelve a su casa, donde su mamá, colérica, lanza las habichuelas por la ventana y regaña a Jack con fuerza.
