Samtidig forøgedes spændingen mellem den herskende katolske kirke og lutheranerne, der ville reformere kirken. Anført af Skipper Clement gjorde bønderne oprør mod den grove undertrykkelse og urimelige ulighed. Der blev slået hårdt ned på oprøret, og de efterfølgende år blev kun værre for bønderne.
