This volume relates the stories of the Borgias and the Cenci. The former, a family of Spanish adventurers, came to dominate the Italian peninsula, and, when Rodergio Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, the world of Christendom, in the late 15th century. The Cenci was an aristocratic family, in which rampant sexual and domestic abuse led to murder and very public execution.

In the second entry of his compilation of the most notorious deeds in European history at his point in time, Alexandre Dumas composes an essay covering a span of nearly 300 years of strife between the Catholics and Protestants of Southern France. Dumas recounts numerous instances of bloody conflict, unruly mobs, assassination, and political turmoil as the Protestants of the region fight to live and worship as they choose and Catholics endeavor to suppress a dangerous threat to their hegemony.

Héloise (la seconda moglie di Villefort) vuole concludere il suo piano diabolico: uccidere Valentine, facendo in modo che suo figlio Édouard riceva tutta l'eredità. Ma Valentine riesce a sopravvivere. Infatti Noirtier fa capire al dottor d'Avrigny che aveva intuito da tempo che avrebbero avvelenato la nipote, e fino a quel momento era riuscito a salvarla dandole ogni giorno un poco della sostanza mortale, neutralizzandone così parzialmente gli effetti.

A Marsiglia Edmond incontra Mercedes (che aveva appena salutato il figlio Albert in partenza per l'Africa). I due parlano a lungo: Mercedes non odia l'uomo che ha davanti, anzi rimprovera sé stessa per le scelte sbagliate che ha fatto. Le strade dei due, un tempo giovani e felicemente innamorati, si dividono per sempre. La morte inaspettata di Édouard, il figlio di Villefort, fa però sorgere in Edmond dei dubbi sulla sua opera di 'giustiziere divino'.

Dopo aver ottenuto da Danglars la sicurezza sul matrimonio con Eugénie, Andrea Cavalcanti/Benedetto viene a sapere che Caderousse lo vuole vedere e si reca da lui. Andrea gli racconta di essere convinto che il suo vero padre sia il Conte di Montecristo e Caderousse, assai interessato alla fortuna del conte, intende derubarlo nella sua casa sugli Champs Èlysées.

I marchesi di Saint-Méran (nonni materni di Valentine Villefort) partono da Marsiglia per Parigi per concludere il matrimonio della nipote con Franz d'Epinay, ma durante il viaggio il marchese muore improvvisamente. A poche ore dalla firma del contratto matrimoniale, quando Valentine e Maximilien Morrel già si preparano alla fuga per non essere separati, anche la signora di Saint-Méran muore di colpo, in circostanze simili al marito.

"En för alla, alla för en!" Alexandre Dumas klassiska äventyrsroman, "De tre musketörerna", handlar om den modige ynglingen D'Artagnan som kommer till Paris för att bli musketör. De tre musketörerna Athos, Portos och Aramis korsar D'Artagnans väg och tillsammans dras de in i maktens intriger. D'Artagnan blir häftigt förälskad i en förtjusande hovdam medan konflikten med England och den lömska kardinal Richelieu lurar i bakgrunden.

21 maggio 1838: quasi dieci anni dopo il suo ritorno a Marsiglia, Dantès inizia a mettere in atto il suo piano di vendetta e si trasferisce a Parigi. Il primo evento mondano avviene la mattina stessa, a colazione da Albert de Morcerf, assieme a Lucien Debray, il signor Beauchamp, il signor Château-Renaud e Maximilien Morrel.

Maximilien Morrel (il figlio dell'armatore marsigliese Morrel) ha un'ottima posizione nell'esercito ed è innamorato di Valentine de Villefort che, pur ricambiandolo, è promessa (per ferrea volontà del padre procuratore del re) al barone Franz d'Epinay. La povera giovane non ha amici, il padre non la considera, mentre la matrigna Héloise è invidiosa del fatto che erediterà un grande patrimonio a discapito del figlio Édouard.

Giunto a Livorno, Dantès si unisce ai contrabbandieri e riparte per varie spedizioni, acquistando la fiducia di tutta la ciurma. Durante questo periodo Dantès si rende sempre più conto di come la sua lunga esperienza in prigione lo abbia cambiato, sia fisicamente che psicologicamente: da giovane idealista è diventato un uomo intenso, vicino all'ossessione per i suoi propositi di vendetta.

Il romanzo riprende con un salto temporale di dieci anni dopo gli eventi narrati nei precedenti tomi, anni che Dantès trascorre viaggiando, soprattutto in Oriente, per raccogliere tutte le informazioni necessarie alla sua vendetta. Siamo nel gennaio del 1838: il barone Franz d'Epinay e il visconte Albert de Morcerf (figlio di Mercedes e di Fernand Mondego, conte de Morcerf) sono a Firenze e stabiliscono di passare il carnevale a Roma.

1815. Edmond Dantès, marinaio di diciannove anni, sbarca a Marsiglia dopo aver preso, da secondo, il comando della nave Pharaon. Qui gli viene confermato dall'armatore Pierre Morrel, proprietario della Pharaon, che verrà ufficialmente nominato capitano: ma questa non è l'unica buona notizia, Edmond può infatti finalmente riabbracciare il suo povero e vecchio padre e sposare la donna che ama, la catalana Mercedes.

In prigione Edmond Dantès chiede disperatamente a un funzionario di poter affrontare un regolare processo, ma data la gravità dell'accusa la sua richiesta viene respinta. Qui incontriamo il vecchio abate Faria che ha scavato un tunnel sotto le celle per poter fuggire da If. Ma Faria sbaglia direzione dello scavo e si ritrova nella cella del giovane. I due diventano amici e ciò risolleva le speranze di Edmond.

A man is held prisoner for most of his life and is forced to wear a mask. There is much mystery surrounding the reason for the mask, but a likely reason is that the prisoner's true identity would threaten the reigning French King Louis XIV. This novel is thought to have some basis in fact, but as the situation was such a mystery at the time it is hard to speculate on what aspects of the current story might be accurate.

Dumas udgav Greven af Monte Cristo som føljetonroman (1830-ernes og 40-ernes store dille) fra august 1844 til januar 1846. Den må i dag betragtes som en af de største klassikere, genoptrykt i utallige udgaver og filmatiseret gentagne gange og stadig uhyre populær. Er baseret på Poul Einer Hansens fine nyoversættelse i et letforståeligt moderne dansk, der bevarer romanens struktur, uden at beskære den for personer eller scener, i en strammere, mere økonomisk fortælleform.
