Hier vollzog sich in rascher Folge seine Traumkarriere bis zum Präsidenten dieser Gesellschaft. 1978 wurde er aus persönlichen Gründen von Henry Ford II. gefeuert, vom konkursreifen Chrysler-Konzern, dem drittgrößten Automobilunternehmen der USA, engagiert. Er übernahm die mit 3,5 Milliarden Dollar hoffnungslos verschuldete Firma, die unter seiner Leitung so viel wie noch nie in ihrer Firmengeschichte verdiente.
