When the state of Colorado ordered its residents to shelter in place in response to the spread of coronavirus, writers Pam Houston and Amy Irvine — who had never met — began a correspondence based on their shared devotion to the rugged, windswept mountains that surround their homes, one on each side of the Continental Divide. Zunächst stellte er sich ein Amerika vor, in dem eine tolerante und demokratische Zukunftsgesellschaft entstehen würde, ohne den Dünkel der englischen Aristokratie. Umso enttäuschter war er über den amerikanischen Kapitalismus und vor allem über die Sklaverei. Seine Kritik an Land und Leuten formulierte er unmittelbar und nicht ohne Ironie in seinen "Aufzeichnungen aus Amerika", gelesen von Christian Brückner.

Über seine Mutter Gertrud schrieb der Künstler Einar Schleef einen Roman. Er nannte ihn "Gertrud" und versuchte darin, ihre ostdeutsche Gedankenwelt nachzuempfinden, von der er seit seiner Flucht in den Westen getrennt war. Mit ihr schrieb er sich auch Briefe. Die Angst der Mutter, die Unbedenklichkeit des Sohnes, die Anhänglichkeit und die Unabhängigkeit - es sind Kräfte, die sich anziehen und gleichzeitig abstoßen.
