A partir del siglo XII van a surgir dos fenómenos sociales que caracterizan lo que va a denominarse la Baja Edad Media, que es el precedente inevitable del Renacimiento. Nos referimos a las ciudades, que habían perdido su importancia socioeconómica desde la decadencia del Imperio romano, y las universidades, que son una nueva base sobre la que se va a construir la revolución cultural de la Baja Edad Media.

La estructura medieval europea mantuvo durante varios siglos el régimen socioeconómico conocido por "feudalismo", que consiste en la fragmentación de los territorios bajo el poder de un conjunto de nobles que ostentan todo el poder civil, militar y económico sobre sus límites. Sobre esta estructura feudal flota la monarquía que encontrará su verdadero puesto varios siglos después.

Las formas góticas alcanzan niveles tan elevados de perfección técnica que nos están anunciando la decadencia de un estilo que ya no puede avanzar sobre sus propios postulados. It has been famously pointed out that the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, but it was also not an empire in the sense people expect when hearing the term. In theory, the emperor was the highest prince in Christendom, and his dominion extended the length and breadth of Western Europe.
