Where Love Is, There God Is Also is a short story by Leo Tolstoy written in 1885, about a shoemaker named Martin Avdeitch. Martin had lost his wife and children, and in his grief, he denied God. One day, after a visit from a missionary, Martin bought a Bible and read about a Pharisee who had invited Jesus into his house, and about the woman who anointed and washed Jesus' feet with her tears. That night, he dreamed that God told him that He would visit him the next day.

This story, also translated as "The Imp and the Bread", concerns a peasant whose piece of bread was stolen by a little demon who hoped it would make the peasant curse. The opposite happened. The devil was displeased, and the imp set out on a successful three-year plan to make the peasant sin.

Unlike his two brothers, a merchant and a militarist, Ivan lacks insight into the ways of the materialistic world. He stays on the farm to look after his parents and sister. The story idealizes peasant life while pointing out the devious and destructive aspects of commerce and the military.

After a year of marriage, Eugene Irtenev's wife, Liza, employs two peasant women. One of them is Stepanida, with whom Eugene had a passionate relationship prior to meeting Liza. Eugene notices Stepanida dancing, and their glances rekindle his desire. Tormented by lust, he thinks of resuming relations with her, but realizes that the affair would cause too much of a scandal.

Tolstoy wrote this fascinating story in 1903. It is a parable about God ‘s creation of work, death, and sickness in order to make mankind happier. Finally, God saw that mankind did not really want to be happy, so he left them alone.

A short story by the Russian author and moral philosopher Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, known as Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). The story, first published in 1912 as "Notes of a Madman", is written from the perspective of an individual who seemed to not be quite sane, and who was examined by doctors. The opinions of the doctors were divided; they argued among themselves and came at last to the conclusion that he was not mad. But this was due to the fact that he tried hard during the examination not to be himself.

Prompted by his late-in-life conversion to Christianity, Tolstoy's novella describes the early Christians' philosophy and their difficult road to freedom of religious expression. Also included is a prefatory story, "A Talk Among Leisured People", which presents the divergent views of enthusiastic, optimistic youth as compared to their elder's mundane acceptance of life and its burdens.

God Sees the Truth, but Waits (1872) is the story of a man falsely convicted and imprisoned in Siberia for a murder he did not commit. Tolstoy explores themes of forgiveness, faith, and guilt in this narrative, which inspired a novella by Stephen King and the film The Shawshank Redemption.
