يعود توماس راسموسن بذاكرته إلى فترة بحثه عن كاتيا في موسكو، بينما الحراس يستعدون لنزال جديد. يتضح أن النزال سيكون ضد آخر سجين يرغب في مقاتلته في السجن.

برحيل إيغور، يصبح توماس راسموسن هو آخر المنبوذين، ويرى السجناء الآخرون أنه يجب أن يعود إلى عنبر المختلين. إذا أراد أن يبقى في القطاع المفتوح فعليه أن يقاتل من أجل ذلك، حرفيًّا.

إذا لم يواظب توماس راسموسن على تمريناته سيعود للعزلة، تمامًا مثل إيجور، الذي يعرف كافكا أنه سينتزع أي أمل في الهرب من قلبه. إذا خسر نزاله التالي فسيعود أيضًا إلى العزلة، حيث سيكون الهرب مستحيلاً.

بعدما صار المقاتل المفضل لدى كافكا، ينتقل توماس راسموسن إلى قسم جديد حيث يلتقي بمقاتل آخر لا يصير مدربه فقط، بل يخبره بالجريمة التي ارتكبها وأودت به إلى بلاك دولفين.

لكي ينجو توماس راسموسن في السجن؛ يجب عليه أن يصير المقاتل المفضل لكافكا، مقاتله الشخصي، وهو ما لا يستطيع تحقيقه إلا بالاشتراك في المباريات التي ينظمها الحراس بين السجناء، ولينال اللقب عليه أن يهزم المقاتل الشخصي السابق، أكثر سجين سيئ السمعة في بلاك دولفين؛ كانيبال.

توماس راسموسن يتذكر حياته التي كان يحظى بها مع زوجته وطفليه، وقد بدت بعيدة للغاية وهو في السجن. ويتذكر كيف انقلبت حياته رأسًا على عقب عندما تعرف إلى المرأة التي تدعى إكاتارينا إڨانوڨا، في كوبنهاغن. بعد أن شجعه أحد أقرب المقربين على استغلال موهبته في تحليل الأرقام والبيانات الإحصاءية، ما مهّد الطريق لدخوله السجن.
