Der Schimmelreiter ist das letzte Werk Theodor Storms, er vollendete es 1888, kurz vor seinem Tod.

Wer Theodor Storm vor allem mit dem windzerzausten Schimmelreiter in Verbindung bringt, wird hier noch eine ganz andere Seite des berühmten Realisten kennenlernen: Oft geht es um die unerfüllte Liebe - die Liebe, die nicht sein kann oder darf, weil beispielsweise der Altersunterschied zu groß ist oder andere Hindernisse dem Glück in den Weg treten. Doch davon wird die Energie, die aus den Gedichten spricht, in keinerlei Hinsicht getrübt. Storm selbst hielt jedenfalls seine Lyrik für gelungener als seine weitaus bekannteren Novellen.

Storms Meisterwerk, das auf einer alten Sage beruht: Hauke Haien heuert als Knecht beim alten Deichgrafen in Nordfriesland an und macht sich schon bald unabdingbar. Als der Alte stirbt, heiratet Hauke dessen Tochter. Doch die Dorfbewohner finden ihn, den Schimmelreiter, unheimlich und widersetzen sich dem Bau eines neuen Deiches. Als jedoch eine Sturmflut den alten Deich zum Brechen bringt, geschieht ein unfassbares Unglück.

Herr Bulemann kehrt nach dem Tod seines Vaters zurück in sein Elternhaus. Er hat seine Frau und Kinder an Sklavenhändler verkauft. Auch die Pfandgüter, die sein Vater von Gläubigern erhalten hat, verkauft er gesetzeswidrig. Er wird immer garstiger. Schließlich läuft ihm auch noch seine Haushälterin davon. Nachdem die Bitte seiner Schwester ablehnt, seinen kranken Neffen zu unterstützen, verwandeln sich die Katzen in schaurige Wesen und halten Bulemann für immer in seinem Haus fest.
