Un giovane viaggiatore ci finisce per caso e mentre cerca informazioni sulla storia locale, gli capita di ascoltare il lungo e delirante racconto di un vecchio marinaio ubriaco, Zadok Allen, che gli narra di demoniache creature degli abissi arrivate da mari lontani. Uscito nel 1936, e Shadow Over Innsmouth è considerato uno dei migliori racconti del terrore di Lovecraft.

All'inizio del secolo scorso il professore Nathaniel Peaslee sviene in aula durante una lezione. Riprende conoscenza solo cinque anni dopo, e scopre che in quel lasso di tempo qualcuno o qualcosa si è impossessato del suo corpo. Si è trattato di uno scambio di coscienze che lo ha portato a vivere in un luogo e un tempo remoti, prigioniero di una razza aliena. O almeno questo è ciò che teme.

Charles Dexter Ward è un giovane proveniente da un'agiata famiglia del Rhode Island, studioso di scienze e antichità, che si imbatte durante le sue ricerche nella figura di Joseph Curwen, suo antenato dall'oscura fama di stregone e negromante. Randolph Carter, è avido di conoscere le meravigliose città dalle cupole d'oro che tante volte ha intravisto tra la veglia e il sonno. Il suo animo cede quando, turbato dalle acque troppo profonde, si trova a dover affrontare dei mostri terribili che all'uomo non è dato di poter combattere con successo. Howard Phillips Lovecraft, spesso citato come H.P. Lovecraft è stato uno scrittore, poeta, critico letterario e saggista statunitense, riconosciuto tra i maggiori scrittori di letteratura horror.

Il professor Albert Wilmarth, insegnante di letteratura inglese presso la Miskatonic University, è anche un appassionato studioso del folklore del New England. In seguito ad alcuni suoi articoli sul giornale locale, che tendono a mettere in ridicolo voci di apparizioni di "strani esseri" nei boschi del Vermont, egli viene contattato dallo studioso Henry Akeley, che afferma di aver avuto un contatto ravvicinato con entità aliene sulle colline del Vermont.

Although it makes numerous references to the Cthulhu Mythos, the story is not a central part of the mythos, but reflects a shift in Lovecraft's writing at this time towards science fiction. The story also introduces the Mi-go, an extraterrestrial race of fungoid creatures.

"The White Ship" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was first published in The United Amateur (Volume 19), November 1919, and later appeared in the March 1927 issue of Weird Tales. Basil Elton, a lighthouse keeper, engages in a peculiar fantasy in which a bearded man in robes is piloting a mystical white ship which appears when the moon is full.

"The Unnamable" is a horror short story by American author H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in September 1923, first published in the July 1925 issue of Weird Tales, and first collected in Beyond the Wall of Sleep. Carter, a weird fiction writer, who is likely the Randolph Carter who features in some of Lovecraft's other tales such as "The Statement of Randolph Carter", meets with his close friend, Joel Manton, in a cemetery near an old, dilapidated house on Meadow Hill in the town of Arkham, Massachusetts.

"The Doom that Came to Sarnath" (1920) is a fantasy short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It is written in a mythic/fantasy style and is associated with his Dream Cycle. It was first published in The Scot, a Scottish amateur fiction magazine, in June 1920. The Doom That Came to Sarnath and Other Stories is also the title for a collection of short stories by Lovecraft, first published in February 1971.

"From Beyond" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1920 and was first published in The Fantasy Fan in June 1934 (Vol. 1, No. 10). The story is told from the first-person perspective of an unnamed narrator and details his experiences with a scientist named Crawford Tillinghast. Tillinghast creates an electronic device that emits a resonance wave, which stimulates an affected person's pineal gland, thereby allowing them to perceive planes of existence outside the scope of accepted reality.

In the tale, an unnamed narrator pieces together the story of an area known by the locals as the "blasted heath" in the wild hills west of the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts.

"The Dreams in the Witch House" is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft, part of the Cthulhu Mythos cycle. Written in January/February 1932, it was first published in the July 1933 issue of Weird Tales. Walter Gilman, a student of mathematics and folklore at Miskatonic University, rents an attic room in the "Witch House", a house in Arkham, Massachusetts that is rumored to be cursed. The house once harboured Keziah Mason, an accused witch who disappeared mysteriously from a Salem jail in 1692.
