Apart from Jesus, there is no character more vividly presented in the gospels than Peter. To talk of Saint Peter is to talk about a man of action. There is a good reason why he is the apostle with the most mentions in the Gospels, and the most referred to in the New Testament (a total of 195 times). In comparison, John, the next most popular disciple, barely reaches 29 references. It is at decisive moments which require a categorical reaction where the leader of the Twelve shines.

Jesús de Nazareth fue un maestro judío de origen rural que vivió en el primer tercio del siglo I de nuestra era. Durante una celebración de la Pascua en Jerusalén fue condenado a la pena de muerte - específicamente crucifixión - por la autoridad imperial de Roma, que en ese momento tenía el control de su país. Muchas cosas más podrían decirse de su vida, pero aparte de este pequeño resumen y quizá uno o dos detalles más, sería complicado que todos los académicos estudiosos de la Biblia levantaran su mano en señal de acuerdo.

Hace poco más de cien años un campesino mexicano llamado Emiliano Zapata reclutó un ejército rural de las plantaciones y pueblos del sur de México, tomó por la fuerza las tierras de los haciendas y comenzó a repartirlas entre los habitantes de Anenecuilco, su pueblo natal en Morelos. Indignado y encolerizado por el despojo que los terratenientes habían venido efectuando durante años contra los pueblos indígenas, había decidido tomar la impartición de la justicia en sus propias manos.

Hoy, el profeta de Nazareth sigue despertando un vivo interés en una amplia cantidad de círculos ortodoxos y heterodoxos. Los libros sobre él son tan abundantes como la proverbial planta de mostaza. Jesús, cuya muerte ocurrió hace casi dos mil años, continúa siendo la más célebre figura religiosa, seguida por cuando menos dos mil millones de personas en todo el mundo, y fuente de inspiración para algunas más.

La frontera entre México y Estados se extiende a lo largo de poco más de doscientos años de historia y dos mil millas de terreno, equivalentes a 3,180 kilómetros. Esta línea creada por el hombre, protagonista de una complicada historia, se ha fortalecido y solidificado con el paso de los años. Sus significados también han cambiado. En un principio era una idea, el fin aproximado e inhóspito de un vasto imperio español y el inicio de la “tierra de nadie”. Después fue un trazo en un papel, una raya porosa, sin barreras físicas, que en tiempos de paz se convirtió en sitio de intercambio y cooperación, y en épocas de conflicto en terreno de choque no sólo de dos pueblos distintos, sino del Norte y el Sur de la geopolítica internacional.

Han pasado casi 150 años de su muerte y todavía se usa una riqueza de apelativos para referirse a Antonio López de Santa Anna, presidente de México en once ocasiones. Hoy, la mayoría de sus compatriotas lo considera el traidor más grande de la historia. No siempre fue así. De hecho, cuando él vivía no hubo político o general más reverenciado, necesario y famoso en México - aunque en intervalos también el más odiado - que el General Santa Anna.

Que Jesús de Nazareth (ca. 4 AC-30 DC) fue crucificado es una de las afirmaciones más cercanas a un hecho histórico que pueda hacerse sobre su él. Sobre los detalles de qué hizo o dijo la academia ha pasado siglos debatiendo, pero en este hecho, que sufrió la pena capital a manos de la autoridad romana por medio de la crucifixión, coincide la abrumadora mayoría de los historiadores del mundo antiguo. Almost 150 years after his death, a lot of name-calling is still being directed towards Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico 11 times in the 19th century, and today, the vast majority of his compatriots consider him the greatest traitor in history.

It is the story of a poor farmer boy who became a bandit out of necessity, after avenging an injustice on his family; a military genius who flew from an oppressive government to lead the largest revolutionary army in his country's history, and defeated dictatorship to become Mexico's liberator, only to fall again in disgrace when his troops abandoned him or were massacred by the enemy.

No other artwork in the world is comparable to the Virgin of Guadalupe. What makes this painting unique - located in the Basilica of Guadalupe, north of Mexico City - is not precisely its artistic quality, as is the case with the Mona Lisa by Leonardo or The Kiss by Gustav Klimt, nor its place in the evolution of painting.
