I dette andet bind i serien om Scotland Yards dygtige detektiv, kriminalkommisær Adam Dalgliesh stilles han i et dilemma, han ikke har stået i før – han er oppe imod en begavet morder, som hele tiden er et skridt foran, og som sandsynligvis vil slå til igen.

Lægerne har fortalt Adam Dalgliesh, at han er alvorligt syg, og han tror på dem. Efter en operation viser det sig, at sygdommen alligevel ikke er så farlig som antaget. Dalgliesh står for at skulle udskrives og rekreere sig. Han kommer derfor til at tænke på sin præsteven, fader Baddeley, som han har fået brev fra, hvori han har bedt om Dalglieshs hjælp.

I nærheden af et afsides liggende præsteseminarium ved Suffolkkysten finder man liget af en af de mandlige studerende, delvis begravet under sandet fra en klint. Hans velhavende far er ikke tilfreds med ligsynskendelsen “død ved et ulykkestilfælde” og kræver, at Scotland Yard efterforsker sagen.

Adam Dalgliesh inddrages i en sag fuld af lidenskab og kærlighed. Og selvfølgelig en god del mystik. The Dupayne i London - et mindre privatejet museum med speciale i mellemkrigsårene - er i oprør. Bestyrelsen kan ikke blive enig om, hvorvidt museet skal lukke eller ej, og pludselig findes et af bestyrelsesmedlemmerne brutalt myrdet.
