பிறருக்கெல்லாம் சொந்தமாக ஒரு பெயர் இருப்பதேகூட ஓர் ஆடம்பரம். ஏழாவதாக பிறந்த என் தாத்தா ஏழான் ஆனார் . கறுப்பாக பிறந்ததனால் என் அப்பா கறுத்தான் ஆனார். அவரது தம்பிக்கு உதடு பெரியது ஆகவே அவர் சுண்டன். அவரது தங்கை கொஞ்சம் சிவப்பு. ஆகவே வெள்ளக்குட்டி. நாய்க்குட்டிகளுக்கு பெயர் வைப்பதுபோலத்தான். சாதியுள்ள பண்ணையார்களின் வீட்டு நாய்களைச் சொல்லவில்லை. அவற்றுக்கு நல்ல பெயர்கள் இருக்கும். தெருநாய்களைச் சொன்னேன்.

"சொல் என்றால் என்ன? சொல்லுக்கு சக்தி உண்டா? சொல் ஒரு கணை போல ஒன்று நூறு ஆயிரம் என்று வளர்ந்து கொண்டே போகும். ஒரு கராரான வியாபாரிக்கு அறம் நழுவாத மனையாள். எழுத்தாளனின் மானுட தரிசனம் ஜெயமோகனின் வரிகளில்.

ஒருபுறம் பழங்குடியினர் இனத்தில் பிறந்து இடம் தவறி குருகுலம் செல்லும் பையன் அங்கேயே படித்து, சிவில் சர்வீஸ் முடித்து பணிக்குச் சேருகிறான். அதிகாரியானாலும் தன் இனத்தாலும் இட ஒதுக்கீட்டின் காரணத்தால் பணிக்கு வந்தமையாலும் அவன் பதவிக்கு ஏற்ற மரியாதையுடன் நடத்தப்படவில்லை. மறுபுறம் அதிகாரியின் தாய் என்பதையும் தாண்டி நகர் வாசத்தில் ஒன்ற விரும்பமில்லாத, பிச்சை எடுப்பதை தொழிலாகக் கொண்டு வாழும் அவனது பாசமிக்க பழங்குடி அம்மா. இவர்களுக்கு நடுவில் சாதாரண அரசாங்கப் பணியாளரான நடுத்தர வர்க்கத்து பெண் ஐஏஎஸ் தகுதிக்காக பழங்குடி அதிகாரியை மணமுடித்து தெருவில் பிச்சை எடுக்கும் மாமியாரின் மருமகளாகிறாள்.
