(Montressor – mi tesoro) (Fortunato – afortunado), se produce una constante antítesis entre ellos, mientras Montressor va con máscara negra y atuendo de caballero, Fortunato está vestido a la usanza de la locura del carnaval como un bufón. Mientras el primero está completamente sobrio, el segundo está totalmente ebrio.

El Gato Negro este corto pero terrorífico relato , quizás sea de los que mejor expresa las atormentadas batallas que tenían lugar en la mente de Edgar Allan Poe. Para mí el gato negro que tanto atormenta al protagonista, no es otra cosa que la idea del mal, que constantemente se encuentra en tránsito del subconsciente al consciente y que o bien se tiene una gran fortaleza de voluntad o acaba obligándonos a hacer cosas que pueden ser terribles.
