The story begins with a protagonist named Edward Prendick who finds himself shipwrecked in an ocean. A passing ship rescues him, and a doctor named Montgomery revives him. He explains to Prendick that they are bound for an unnamed island where he works, together with the animals aboard the ship. When they arrive on the island, however, both the captain of the ship and Doctor Montgomery refuse to take Prendick with either of them, stranding him between the ship and the island.

Narrowly missing death at sea, Pendrick finds a risky sanctuary on a remote island as an invited guest of Dr. Moreau. Pendrick is unaware of the evil that lurks behind the scenes. Dr. Moreau is in the midst of scientific experiments he feels will benefit all mankind. Whether his ambitions are worthy, or mad, is yet to be proven. He has succeeded only in achieving the grotesque. When Pendrick finally discovers the extent of Moreau's ghastly experiments, he is horrified at what he sees.

Love and Mr Lewisham (subtitled The Story of a Very Young Couple) is a 1900 novel set in the 1880s by H. G. Wells. It was among his first fictional writings outside the science fiction genre. Wells took considerable pains over the manuscript and said that "the writing was an altogether more serious undertaking than I have ever done before."
