"The Ugly Duckling" is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. When the tale begins, a mother duck's eggs hatch. He wanders sadly from the barnyard and lives with wild ducks and geese until hunters slaughter the flocks. He finds a home with an old woman but her cat and hen tease him mercilessly and again he sets off on his own. He sees a flock of migrating wild swans; he is delighted and excited but he cannot join them for he is too young and cannot fly.

How did we choose the words that you should know first? We interviewed Italian natives and let them speak about the subject of their choice. We then selected a minute and a half of these conversations and isolated every word pronounced, classifying them into basic, primary, and secondary vocabulary. In the basic list, we put all the words that appear systematically in every conversation. Table, crayon-pencil, or avion-airplane would be included in the primary vocabulary list, but not in the basic vocabulary list where you will find words like: for, that, what, I, of, in, am.
