Den charmerande och excentriska Lucy Angkatell har bjudit in flera släktingar till huset Gropen ute på landsbygden, bland gästerna finns skulptören Henrietta, dr John Christow och hans fru Gerda. I ett av grannhusen bor detektiven Hercule Poirot. En dag blir Poirot bjuden till Gropen på lunch, men när han anländer möts han av en ytterst bisarr scen. Fast ein Jahr liegt es zurück, dass Rosemary Barton auf ihrer eigenen Geburtstagsfeier an Gift starb. Damals war man sicher: Selbstmord. Jetzt versammeln sich ihre Freunde erneut und diesmal hätte es eine gelungene Geburtstagsfeier werden können. Doch nach und nach tauchen Zweifel an Rosemarys Selbstmord auf, und das Misstrauen wächst - bis schließlich ein zweiter Mord geschieht.
