Venne definito dall'autore un romanzo-studio "psicologico e fidiologico", in riferimento alla complessità caratteriale dei personaggi, sui cui comportamenti si incentra l'analisi dello scrittore. Tutti i personaggi agiscono comunque per egoismo: mamma Raquin cresce la nipote in funzione di suo figlio, soffocandone la personalità per farle poi sposare il figlio inetto.

In novels such as Flaubert's Madame Bovary and Zola's Nana, sex and violence were examined with vivid clarity. These realists soon adopted the word naturalism to describe their writings.

"Comment on se marie" regroupe quatre courts récits d'Émile Zola, qui relèvent de l'étude de mœurs. Quatre mariages, quatre milieux sociaux différents et un seul regard. Si, chez les bourgeois, le mariage est une transaction financière, chez d'autres l'amour est possible. L'auteur montre les différences de modes de vie pour mieux laisser apprécier l'absolue similarité des rapports conjugaux, et l'inexorable défaite du mariage tel que le XIXe siècle l'imposait aux hommes et aux femmes.

Country girl Denise Baudu arrives in Paris hoping for a position in her uncle's clothing shop. However, her uncle's shop, along with other small shops in the area, is doing poorly. This is due to the large store across the street - The Ladies' Paradise - which is swallowing up the small specialty stores by offering 'one-stop shopping' at discounted prices. 19th Century Paris is experiencing the dawn of the department store. Despite her loyalty to her uncle, Denise is drawn to the progressive Ladies' Paradise and it's owner, the driven but charismatic Monsieur Mouret.

Zola publie en 1898 l'article "J'accuse !" dans "L'Aurore", pour dénoncer l'incroyable erreur judiciaire portée à l'encontre d'Alfred Dreyfus.
