Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, or a Brief Relation of the Exceeding Mercy of God in Christ to his Poor Servant John Bunyan, is a Puritan spiritual autobiography written by John Bunyan. It was composed while Bunyan was serving a 12-year prison sentence in Bedford prison for preaching without a license, and was first published in 1666.

Seventeenth-century Puritan John Bunyan speaks to us in a way that is much different from usual preachers. Wegen seines Glaubens wurde Bunyan verfolgt und verbrachte lange Zeit im Gefängnis. Während seiner Haftzeit schrieb er “The Pilgrims Progress“, das unter dem Titel “Christen auf dem Weg zur Ewigkeit“ erschienen ist. Die darin geschilderte Reise ist eine Metapher für den Weg, den ein Mensch antreten muss, um nach diesem Leben ein Einwohner der himmlischen Stadt werden zu können.

The works of John Bunyan are still relevant today as they were 300 years ago. Bunyan faced a lot of religious persecution due to his nonconformist preaching, and due to his faith, he was thrown into prison. Fearing that he might die in prison, John Bunyan synthesized all his struggles and journey of salvation into his writings so that his readers may follow on his path and find God.

O Peregrino inicia com um poema no qual descreve os motivos para a obra e a razão de usar formas alegóricas (semelhante aos autos do teatro medieval) para contar a aventura do viajante que se encontra com personagens de carne e osso, mas que possuem nomes simbólicos que remetem ao evangelho de Jesus Cristo, como Evangelista, Adulação, Malicia, Apoliom e Vigilância. Um clássico cristão que ainda hoje tem um importante papel como guia sobre a perseverança em meio a dificuldades.
