At the age of five, little orphan Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the Alps. Everyone on the village is afraid of him, but Heidi is fascinated by his long beard and bushy grey eyebrows. She loves her life in the mountains, playing in the sunshine and growing up amongst the goats and the birds. But one terrible day Heidi is collected by her aunt and made to live with a new family in the town. Heidi can't bear to be away from her grandfather; can she find her way back up the mountain, where she belongs?

Moni, the goat boy, was a very cheerful young man who loved his job and his flock with all his heart. Unassuming in plot and style, Heidi may none the less lay claim to rank as a world classic. In the first place, both background and characters ring true. The air of the Alps is wafted to us in every moment; the house among the pines, the meadows, and the eagle poised above the naked rocks form a picture that no one could willingly forget. And the people, from the kindly towns-folk to the quaint and touching peasant types, are as real as any representation of human nature need be. Every goat even, has its personality.

Heidi erkrankt jedoch vor Heimweh und muss auf Anraten des Arztes zu ihrem Großvater zurückgeschickt werden.

First published in 1881, the subtitle of this book tells us that it was written “for children and those who love children”. Heidi, a 5-year-old orphan, is handed off by her young Aunt Dete to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Though her new life is foreign, Heidi soon falls in love with her grandfather, and he with her. They share a contented life of goat-herding. But when Grandfather refuses to allow Heidi to attend school in the small village below, quarrels ensue.
