L. Frank Baums "Dot and Tot of Merryland" erschien 1901, ein Jahr nach "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", und Baum und sein Illustrator W. W. Denslow erhofften sich von dem neuen Buch einen ähnlichen Erfolg. Der blieb aber zu ihrer Enttäuschung aus; das Buch geriet neben den "Oz"-Geschichten nahezu in Vergessenheit. 1994 hat es der New Yorker Verlag The Emerald City Press in seiner Reihe "Books of Wonder" neu aufgelegt (mit Bildern von Donald Abbott).

Dorothy kommt mit dem Zug und ihrer Katze Eureka nach Hugson in Kalifornien, wo sie Onkel Bill Hugson besuchen will, bei dem sich gerade Onkel Henry aufhält.
