Der junge Lewko, Sohn des Bauernbürgermeisters, und die Kosakentochter Hanna lieben sich. Lewkos verwitweter Vater, ein übler Schürzenjäger, ist gegen die Heirat des Paares und macht sich selbst an Hanna heran. Als sich Dorfburschen gegen den Bauernbürgermeister zusammenrotten, wird Lewko deren Anführer und schon bald verhaftet. Doch Lewko kann sich befreien. Eines Tages schaut Lewko in einen Teich und das, was er dort sieht, wird die Zukunft von ihm und Hanna für immer verändern.

Aberwitzige Novelle mit absurder Handlung. Der Barbier Ivan Jakovlevic findet eines Morgens die Nase seines Kunden Kowaljow in seinem Frühstücksbrot. Voller Angst verpackt er die Nase und wirft sie von einer Brücke in den Fluss. Kowaljow macht sich auf die Suche nach seiner Nase und trifft diese auf der Straße wieder - in der Uniform eines Staatrats, der er selber gern wäre. Kowaljow möchte seine Nase zurück haben, doch diese denkt nicht mal im Traum daran.

Akakij, ein kleiner Beamter, will seinen Mantel flicken lassen - doch überredet ihn der Schneider zu einem neuen. Als er diesen Mantel in Händen hält, ändert sich sein ganzes Leben: Er wird plötzlich wahrgenommen! Doch sein Glück ist nur kurz: Der Mantel wird gestohlen. Akakij ist verzweifelt - und sein Niedergang scheint unaufhaltsam.

"Diario de un loco", publicada en 1834, es una historia muy corta, de apenas viente páginas, pero que se compensa con lo hilarante y extraño de su contenido, muy al estilo de Gogol. La historia es escrita a manera de diario íntimo contado en primera persona y ordenado cronológicamente por un funcionario público, llamado Aksenti Ivanovich (42 años) y de un apellido extraño, según comentario de uno de los personajes. El diario inicia un tal 3 de octubre, no se precisa el año y se va narrando muy escasamente de lo que le va sucediendo al personaje.

The Nose is a short story by Nikolai Gogol and was published in 1836. It tells the story of a man (known as Major Kovalyov) who lost his nose in an extraordinarily strange incident. He soon realizes that his nose dressed as a man of high rank and pretending to be a human being: It goes to church and can talk to Kovalyov. He tries to get the nose back on his face in many different ways but the nose refuses to return.

El capote, escrito por Nikolái Gógol entre los años 1839 y 1841, y publicado en 1842, nos presenta uno de los más conmovedores personajes de la Literatura: Akaki Akákievich Bashmachkin, un funcionario de la escala más baja de la administración civil, que se ve ultrajado por las injusticias sociales y la indiferencia egoísta de los fuertes y ricos, y cuyo destino es el de ser un "hombre insignificante".

La historia se la narra un joven a su novia, a la que considera muy crédula en temas de superstición, pero esa misma noche una serie de acontecimientos le harán replantearse sus propias creencias. La historia en cuestión trata sobre los antiguos habitantes de una casa abandonada.

Presenta la historia de Akaki Akákievich Bashmachkin, un funcionario de San Petersburgo que trabaja como copista en los escalafones más bajos de la administración rusa. Pese a su humilde condición, debe gastar todos sus ahorros en encargar un nuevo capote para protegerse del duro invierno petersburgués. El argumento de la obra está basado en una noticia que Gógol leyó sobre un pobre oficinista que, después de un largo ahorro, compró un rifle y lo perdió en unos juncos cuando salió a cazar.

Es un cuento del escritor Nikolái Gógol que relata la historia de un burócrata que escribe en su diario lo que le sucede. Poco a poco va relatando su descenso a la locura. Primero se ven pequeñas cosas como fechas que no concuerdan, luego perros hablando y mandando correspondencia, y sus comentarios a través de la historia son cada vez más raros hasta que pierde la cordura completamente.

The story centers on an impoverished clerk who is dedicated to his job as a routine copyist but not recognized for his hard work. Younger clerks mock him for his dedication. His threadbare overcoat is mocked as well. He saves up to buy a new one and wears it for one glorious evening, only to have it stolen that night. He dies soon after from his great loss. Thereafter, his ghost is reported to haunt that part of St. Petersburg where the coat was stolen.
