Il trenino Thomas è in cerca di avventure e sfida i suoi amici a gareggiare per scoprire chi sia il più veloce. Però, mentre sfreccia tentando di superare Gordon, frena improvvisamente davanti ad un semaforo rosso, facendo volare i vagoni fuori dai binari. Per punizione, Sir Topham lo sostituisce con un'altra locomotiva e lo manda a lavorare nella nuova diramazione della ferrovia. Qui, a causa di una sua disattenzione, Thomas fa franare il terreno sotto i binari e cade giù, ma ciò che si manifesta davanti ai suoi occhi è una scoperta incredibile: una nave pirata!
