I was a rescuer for 47 years. I spent those years ignoring my own problems and trying to rescue everyone else. I had been socially programmed to be a rescuer by my family. Rescuing was part of my family-culture and ran through our DNA going back at least four generations. My grandfathers were rescuers too, and like me, their rescuing behaviors destroyed relationships and cost lives. My rescuing behaviors cost me two marriages, both ending in divorce, and left me burned-out and broke without food for my children on Christmas Eve.

It’s time to step up and harness your anger. They say ignorance is bliss, but it’s not. Willful ignorance is killing us. It is killing us violently, relentlessly, and without mercy. Conscious growth is not for the person who believes that the fault lies with someone else and is seeking to shift the blame.
