Claire Redding, a rising star within Police Scotland, is being fast-tracked for greater things. She is transferred to "L" Division in Dumbarton and is tasked with solving a series of local burglaries which all have one thing in common: They appear to be perfect crimes. DI Redding firmly believes that there's no such thing as a perfect crime and is determined to catch the elusive thief and further enhance her career. When the body of a young Helensburgh woman is washed up on the shore of the River Clyde, DI Claire Redding takes on what turns out to be the biggest case of her career to date. The mystery deepens when forensic evidence found on the body reveals surprising results. However, pressure builds when the body of a well known local man is washed up a few days later and the young detective has not only to overcome some very serious personal issues but must solve the case quickly.

A dead politician and a long list of suspects makes for an extremely difficult case for Detective Inspector Claire Redding on her return to work after a long period of recovery but, as usual, this tough little detective is determined to find the killer and won’t stop until she does. However, things are not going well at home and even Claire needs the help of a friend to dampen her inner turmoil but will she heed the advice offered or will Claire go with her instincts, for better or for worse?
