The scourge of the Savage Lands, an ancient dragon allied to a gathering storm of dark forces threatening the world of Ruin, becomes the next target of the most fearsome shock troops ever conceived, prepared, and trained for total war: US Army Rangers. The next chapter in the war against Sût the Undying and the Nether Sorcerer unfolds against the backdrop of what it takes to become a US Army Ranger. The Rangers' next objective takes them on an odyssey of desperate survival and relentless combat through the Desert of Sleep, a savage and strange land...and a gateway to hell. Here the forces of darkness fester, here the elements of the Rangers must go on the ultimate patrol, and here is where the End War begins.

The battle begins against the Lich-Pharaoh as the Rangers go for a fatal strike against the Saurian-controlled Port of Sûstagul in the Land of Black Sleep. Brutal house-to-house fighting and relentlessly kinetic street battles erupt as special teams conduct high-value target raids against sorcerers, war chieftains, and deadly guilds of assassins in an effort to stop the Saur from joining forces with the powerful Nether Sorcerer. Failure lies around all the blind corners and damnation down every dark alley in this desperate bid to save civilization from the forces of darkness.

What starts as a mission to control a key area of a city under siege becomes a relentless race against the clock for Ranger Team Leader Louis Campbell. One minute Lou and his team are fighting Saur infantry looking to stab them in the face, and the next he’s saddled with a bunch of dwarven sappers looking to breach the city's catacombs—or risk losing the city of Sûstagul to a tidal wave of undead.

History records massive ancient battles at Carthage, Megiddo, and Cannae. Soon it will record an even greater one...at Sustugul. Surrounded in the desert port of Sustugul, the Rangers and their new allies must fight a desperate defense. The legions of the Lich Pharaoh, led by a fierce and brutal warrior queen medusa from the Land of Black Sleep, have erupted out of the tomb-haunted south, and overwhelming forces of savage orc hordes swarm the walls of the besieged city.

With the armies of the enemy smashed at the final battle for the desert port city, the Rangers return to their primary mission to do what they do best: eliminate a high-value target with extreme violence of action deep inside hostile territory. Failure is not an option—even if that target is a ten-thousand-year-old undead sorcerer of incredible power surrounded by dark, deadly cabals and savage monsters of myth and fable that are all too real.
