When Jack Colby glimpses a 1938 Lagonda V12 lying uncared for in a Kentish country barn, he just has to have a closer look – which brings him face to face with its angry owner, Polly Davis, former TV presenter and widow of car dealer Mike. Is it the car or Polly that captivates his heart? No question, he has to find out more about both. Jack’s enquiries are abruptly cut short, when some days later he finds Polly’s murdered body lying outside the barn.

All is not well on the film set of director Bill Wade’s new blockbuster, Dark Harvest, currently being shot in Kent. At first Jack Colby, car detective, can’t believe his luck when he is called in to investigate the disappearance of Bill Wade’s rare 1935 Auburn speedster, but he soon realises that this is no straightforward theft - there is much more at stake.… Despite his instant attraction to the charismatic lead of Dark Harvest, Louise Shaw, Jack senses that cast and crew are at odds with each other - and especially with the director’s wife, Angie. Jack’s warning light begins to flash about his assignment - and rightly so.

Car detective Jack Colby is asked by the “Mad Major” to find one of the original five cars that took part in the Peking to Paris rally of 1907. The Major and two fellow trustees plan to rerun the rally for charity – only this time in Kent with towns and villages on the route transforming themselves into their Chinese counterparts. He is determined to find one of the two original De Dion Bouton competitors, which is rumoured to be somewhere in Kent.

When Jack Colby, car detective, hears the voice of his former wife, Eva, on the phone he fears the worst. The body of her husband, Mexican band leader Carlos, has been found and Eva becomes the chief suspect. Car detective Jack goes into action - although he is hindered by a second case, as the beautiful 20-year-old Daisy is determined that his efforts should be devoted to finding her stolen Morris Minor.

When Jack Colby hears a rumour that Old Herne’s, the club for aviation and classic car veterans, is closing, he is appalled. He has been commissioned to investigate the theft of the Porsche car belonging to its manager, the popular Mike Nelson, but now far worse problems threaten the club when brutal murder proves to be on the agenda. Jack finds himself caught between two families.
