Mackenzie—Mack—Owens was supposed to live out every millennial’s dream, but instead it turned into a nightmare. Inheriting a house and bookstore, she was going to leave the New York City rat race after getting fired from her job and start a new life on the coast of Cornwall in England. No more 14-hour work days and rats the size of small toddlers. Hello turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and cobblestone streets. Unfortunately, things don’t exactly go as planned.

When a friend of Maggie’s dies, everyone believes it’s by natural causes, including the local authorities. But Maggie knows better. Someone killed her friend, and she enlists Mack’s help to prove it. And just when Mack thinks a new murder to solve is enough for one week, she finds herself embroiled in the middle of a theft at a poker game involving many of the less savory characters in town.

An explosion in St. Albinus rocks more than just the town centre when the victim turns out to be someone from Maggie’s past. Mack pretty quickly decides the two of them have to find the killer, because the victim had a lot of skeletons in his closet—literally —and it’s going to take someone who was around back in the day to get to the bottom of this. Meanwhile, someone around town is spreading rumours about Mack, and she’s pretty sure she knows who’s behind them. And how come Aksel seems to magically be involved in every case Mack decides to investigate?

There are more than just paintings on display at the St. Albinus art festival as Mack shows up one morning to find a body propped up against one of the easels. And worse, a threatening message on the body indicates this might not be the killer's last victim. Deciding that solving this crime is her key to making a name for herself in town—for a good reason, for once—Mack immediately decides she’s going to figure out who killed the artist. But, she very quickly discovers that the victim had a lot more than watercolors on his palette.
