Fiend hunter Sam “Sabertooth” Forest is used to being on the outskirts. Being a cur with a mix of shifter and human blood, Sam can’t fully shift to beast, but can’t fully pass as human. Through sheer determination, and a desire to protect the broken shifter woman who raised them, Sam has managed to eek out a place of their own in a world devastated by the rift that allowed monsters to spill into the earth plane. Sam hunts monsters, sometimes curs and mongrels just like Sam.

At 28 years old, Sam thought they were old enough to stop making terrible decisions. But taking a merc job for a human millionaire can’t be described as anything else. Neither can drinking so much fairy moonshine that you forget there are good reasons not to let yourself think with your...parts. Hunting people is a whole different world than hunting supernatural beasts, and Sam and their guild might not come out on the winning side of this one.

What’s more fun than dragging a politician, an ogre, a leprechaun, and a hired killer across the wastelands to retrieve a human passenger? Anything. Anything would be more enjoyable than this - even hunting hungry fiends. Sam is questioning their life choices. Maybe it would just be easier to murder the idiots and leave the bodies in the wastelands. But, growl as Sam might, everyone knows the hunter will do the right thing. And helping the idealistic human sovereign move his family member and closest advisor from Golding to Westhold is the right thing to do.

Tensions in Westhold are rising with the ascension of a new leader, who has some radical ideas about what the relationship between humans, curs, and fiends should look like. Sam soon finds himself swept up in the upheaval that comes with changing the status quo.

Viceroy. It’s not a term Sam would have ever thought would apply to them. But for some reason, the sovereign of Westhold seems to trust Sam with his life - and with the legacy the crazy, not-so-human firebird is building. But none of that matters if Sam can’t conquer their fear and insecurities and keep from going feral.

The phoenix sovereign of Westhold might not want Sam for anything more than their hunter skills, but that won’t stop the saber-toothed hunter from defending their unclaimed mate — and the stupid utopian city of equality that Theo insists on building. Things heat up in the last installment of the Not Quite series…and someone might just get burned.
