Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. When a peculiar letter arrives inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse, the former head of the Sûreté du Québec discovers that a complete stranger has named him one of the executors of her will. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder. None of them had ever met the elderly woman. The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.

It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.

It’s Gamache’s first day back as head of the homicide department, a job he temporarily shares with his previous second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir. Flood waters are rising across the province. In the middle of the turmoil a father approaches Gamache, pleading for help in finding his daughter. As crisis piles upon crisis, Gamache tries to hold off the encroaching chaos, and realizes the search for Vivienne Godin should be abandoned. But with a daughter of his own, he finds himself developing a profound, and perhaps unwise, empathy for her distraught father.

Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Montréal connaît des heures sombres. Après être disparus quelques jours, des gens refont surface...un organe en moins. Ils ne se souviennent de rien, et le mystère plane sur ce qui a pu leur arriver. Nick Jarvis et sa collègue Julie Montpetit héritent d'une enquête qui les transporte dans un univers qu'ils méconnaissent: hôpitaux, médecins, transplantations.... Forcés de plonger dans l'enfer du trafic humain et du marché noir des organes, ils n'ont pas fini d'être surpris par les nouveaux Frankenstein de l'horreur.

Ayant démissionné des crimes majeurs, Victor Lessard accepte de donner ses impressions à son ancienne partenaire, Jacinthe Taillon, sur la scène du meurtre d'un journaliste d'enquête. En parallèle, son mentor, Ted Rutherford, lui fait une révélation troublante à propos du passé de son père, Henri Lessard. Pris pour cible dans un attentat, Victor doit bientôt disparaître pour assurer sa sécurité et celle de ses proches.

Dans ce qui a tout l’air d’être un drame familial, une femme et ses trois enfants sont sauvagement tués à coups de hache. L’auteur présumé du carnage, le mari, s’est suicidé après s’être tranché la langue. Mais est-ce bien ce qui s’est passé? Deux jours après, une alerte AMBER est déclenchée à l’échelle de la province de Québec: une jeune fille dévoilant ses charmes sur internet a été kidnappée. Par qui? Pourquoi?

Responsable de la section des crimes majeurs en l'absence de son supérieur, le sergent-détective Victor Lessard se voit confier la mission d'enquêter sur la mort d'un haut gradé du SPVM dont on a retrouvé la tête dans un conteneur à déchets. Formé du jeune Loïc Blouin-Dubois, de l'inimitable Jacinthe Taillon et de Nadja Fernandez, avec qui Victor partage sa vie, le groupe d'enquête qu'il dirige doit faire vite, car l'assassin a laissé un message qui annonce de nouvelles victimes.
