Story
The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. There once was a killer who knew the night, its secrets and rhythms. How to hide within its shadows. When to hunt. He roamed from town to town, city to city, choosing his prey for their beauty and innocence. His cruelties were infinite, his humanity long since forfeit. But still... he had not yet discovered how to make his special mark among monsters, how to come fully alive as Death. This is the story of how he learned those things, and of what we might do to ensure that he does not visit us.

Publisher's Summary
On a snowy winter evening in 1982, 21-year-old Mary Brown accepted a ride from a handsome stranger in the resort town of Breckenridge, Colorado. The trip ended with her brutally beaten and raped. Mary survived, but her predator's violence had only just begun.
After 10 years in prison, Tom Luther was released a far more vicious criminal. Soon, from the Rockies to West Virginia, like Ted Bundy, Luther enticed a chain of women into his murderous trap. In this gripping new edition of a true crime masterpiece, acclaimed author Steve Jackson recounts the intriguing pursuit and long awaited conviction of a charismatic, monstrous psychopath - one who remains a suspect in three other crimes, and has never given up hope of escape.
What the critics say
"One of the best books short of the famous Ann Rule works." (True Crime Book Reviews)
"Steve Jackson is a born storyteller. He makes you sweat...and turn the page." (Ron Franscell, author of The Darkest Night)

Incredible book, I couldn't stop listening!
I thought this story would get a little long winded or jump from person to person when I saw it was 19hrs long. Instead, this story is accurate, to the facts, smart and and easy listen. I was sucked in and couldn't stop listening, it's a wild story about the serial killer Thomas Luther and his many victims. Absolutely brilliant writing! can't say enough good about this, I'd recommend it to anyone.

The Best Crime Novel I Have Ever Read!
I love this book. It makes you feel like you are listening to a true crime depiction such as those shown on the TV show 48 Hours. You learn early on who the killer is but the story of Detective Richardson’s endless pursuit is riveting. The narration by Kevin Pierce is mesmerizing. And the Epilogue is amazing. It ties up the loose ends and let’s you know what happened to most of the characters in the book. All in all, a great read!

Who knew?
I have been watching Dateline since day one (29 years and ongoing!) and continue watching, reading and listening to true crime stories all the time. I had never heard of Tom Luther! This was a fascinating story of a particularly sadistic serial killer who behaved in ways that beg comparison to Ted Bundy. Seemingly kind and charismatic, Luther turned into a monster when confronted with petite brunettes who reminded him of his abusive mother. There's a lot to unpack in this long book, and the author does a thorough job. So thorough, in fact, that it does become a bit repetitive in places. Particularly when recounting his girlfriend, Debra Snider's, history and interviews. I tried very much to empathize with this woman who knew everything he did and kept standing by her man time and time again. Ugh. No luck. The book can be graphic in places, therefore triggering to some, however, I appreciated that the author pulled no punches the way many do when discussing violent sexual attacks. There was no innuendo about "sexual assault" or "abuse". All the details were clearly explained in brutally clear and honest language. Maybe it's not easy to read or listen to, but that's exactly how it should be to make sure the reader understands the true horror of what these poor women went through. The narrator is great. For such a thoroughly researched piece of work, told in an interesting way, this book deserves 5 stars for sure.
