Story
In the 25th century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person's consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or "sleeve") making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Story
In 1942, Lawrence Pritchard Waterhouse - mathematical genius and young Captain in the US Navy - is assigned to detachment 2702. It is an outfit so secret that only a handful of people know it exists, and some of those people have names like Churchill and Roosevelt. The mission of Watrehouse and Detachment 2702 - commanded by Marine Raider Bobby Shaftoe - is to keep the Nazis ignorant of the fact that Allied Intelligence has cracked the enemy's fabled Enigma code. In the present, Waterhouse's crypto-hacker grandson, Randy, is attempting to create a "data haven" in Southeast Asia....

Publisher's Summary
Once a gang member, then a marine, then a galaxy-hopping Envoy trained to wreak slaughter and suppression across the stars, a bleeding, wounded Kovacs was chilling out in a New Hokkaido bar when some so-called holy men descended on a slim beauty with tangled, hyperwired hair. An act of quixotic chivalry later and Kovacs was in deep: mixed up with a woman with two names, many powers, and one explosive history.
In a world where the real and virtual are one and the same and the dead can come back to life, the damsel in distress may be none other than the infamous Quellcrist Falconer, the vaporized symbol of a freedom now gone from Harlan's World. Kovacs can deal with the madness of AI. He can do his part in a battle against biomachines gone wild, search for a three-centuries-old missing weapons system, and live with a blood feud with the yakuza, and even with the betrayal of people he once trusted. But when his relationship with "the" Falconer brings him an enemy specially designed to destroy him, he knows it's time to be afraid.
After all, the guy sent to kill him is himself: but younger, stronger, and straight out of hell.
Wild, provocative, and riveting, Woken Furies is a full-bore science fiction spectacular of the highest order from one of the most original and spellbinding storytellers at work today.
What the critics say
"The author's eye for detail and feel for the atmosphere and nuances of SF noir result in a story packed with action and angst that will also appeal to general suspense readers." (Library Journal)
"Morgan's anxiously awaited third Takeshi Kovacs novel makes a terrific addition to an award-winning series....Highly recommended for followers of the series, cyberpunk devotees, and hard-boiled detective fans not averse to a little genre-bending." (Booklist)

The story is good audio is off
Once I got past the first 10 minutes of the book the audio got better, but at that they use it as a way of telling passed event's that happen it gets old fast. But overall a good story.

Easier to follow than the second book
Went deeply philosophical in the conversations by the end.
Lots of descriptive scene setting. The detail is a little much so it’s easy to space out and miss a major plot element.
I think it’ll do better as a TV series with fast cutting and a screenplay designed to keep you engaged between episodes.

What happened?
I can't finish this mess. Gaping plot holes, terrible sound design (echoing and fading in and out) and no narrator preparation kill this production. The new narrator can't even pronounce the main character's name correctly. The first book explains the correct pronunciation. Aristocrats that are backed up and resleeved after having their heads blown off in other books are suddenly vulnerable to being kidnapped and murdered. Lots of filler to pad this brick to the required word count. Just because this series got picked up and turned into a TV show doesn't mean you should read past book one. It's been rolling downhill since then. Getting a refund.

Extremely Disappointed.
Big fan of Richard Morgan and having read the book before I can tell you it is an incredible story. The quality of this audiobook though is easily the worst I’ve purchased on Audible, from strange echoing portions and awful character voices to strange immersion breaking sound effects. Honestly the worst part is the narrators constant mispronunciation of the main characters name. If you enjoyed the first two audiobooks in the series, be prepared for a let down.

Not loving the new narrator
I have to agree with a lot of the other reviewers on this one... the story was ok once you get past the distracting and unnecessarily graphic sex scenes (an issue I had with all three Kovacs novels), but the new narrator really butchers the characters. Aside from mispronouncing the protagonist’s name EVERY single time, and the annoying reverb effect which made listening in my car next to impossible, my biggest pet peeve was that his female characters all come across as whiny or ditsy. Given how generally badass the women in this story were, it was very annoying to have them performed so weakly. Overall not the worst story I’d ever read (neither of the sequels came close to being as good as ‘Altered Carbon’) but it could have been made much more enjoyable with the proper reader.

Wish they would have stuck with the original narrator
Story was fine. Wrapped up the trilogy well enough. Really didn’t enjoy the narrator swap between book 2 and 3. Audio quality seemed worse. Had to struggle through it to hear the end of the trilogy.

Good book. Terrible recording.
Seriously, was this recorded in a cave? Also, when the narrator can't even pronounce the main character's name correctly, you know that the next 22 hours are going to be frustrating.

Sounds quality.
Whoever decided to used a lecture hall sound effect for chapter two... maybe need to reexamine some of his or her other decisions? I'll keep pushing forward because I really like the first two books, but that was a painful 12 min.
(this review was written right after chapter 2 finished)

Bad narration
I did not realize how much Todd McFarlane's voice added to the audio book experience, he made the first two books amazing. I think he truly pinpointed what it meant to be Kovacs
Having said that, the vocals for Woken Furies are bad. How bad? Like listening to a speakerphone in a hallway bad. The added effects only distract and annoy, rather than adding value. The narration seems amateurish in comparison with the first two books. The characters simply do not sound right. I regret buying the audio book.
