Although Barbara Lazar has an academic background (English Literature from Syracuse University, masters' from the University of South Florida and doctorate from the University of Virginia) her diverse experience saw her as a mainframe programmer for NASA and an Instructional Systems Designer for major corporations (Xerox, Quotron, PacTel and TRW) and the Army. She worked as co-editor for the Japan America Society of San Antonio Newsletter and has also published articles on Japanese poetry and several of her poems. She currently writes and teaches writing in San Antonio. Pillow Book of the Flower Samurai won FIRST PLACE in the Novel Division of the San Gabriel Writers’ League Writing Smarter Contest and the San Antonio Writers’ Guild (SAWG). In the latter, it was the first to receive 100% in all categories judged. Her office is packed with Japanese history books and articles and as many irises as she can find. She studied sumie (Japanese brush) painting and plans to illustrate some of her children’s books.
