Charley Helvy was born in Sand Springs Oklahoma, his family relocated to the Dallas/Ft Worth metro area where he lived until the second grade. His family relocated to Cushing Oklahoma where he graduated high school although there were some short stints in Joplin Missouri and Redding California. Charley's Interest in Diesel and automotive began in high school when he attended Central Vo-Tech Diesel Technology course his Junior and Senior Years of high school. Interested in pursuing his interest in diesels and heavy equipment, Charley enlisted in the United States Air Force in August of 1993 as a Special Purpose Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic. After a very successful career in the Air Force Charley retired from the Air Force early due to injuries in 2008. After military retirement Charley spent 2 years as a government contractor working at a vehicle maintenance shop on a Middle East Air Force installation. During this time he also worked to finish the bachelors degree he began while in the Air Force graduating with a Bachelors in Technical Management. Returning stateside in 2010 Charley worked in Killeen Texas as a school bus mechanic, shop manager at an automotive dealership and a fleet manager for a food distribution company. In 2013 Charley was presented the opportunity to become a diesel instructor at Universal Technical Institute in Avondale Arizona where he still currently works. He is the content creator for a YouTube channel called Charley's Garage where he makes videos about diesels and classic cars, you can find him on most social media under that name.
