Daniel Sobieck discovered his first public library at age nine. There he found books that opened a world to the outdoors he has been pursuing ever since, both in literature and in the field. His early years included work as a farm laborer, dishwasher, janitor, butcher, security guard, camp counselor, and newspaper reporter—culminating in an English degree from Hamline University. He retired after serving nearly 30 years in managerial and executive positions with the US Departments of Treasury, Agriculture, and Interior, where he directed Congressional, Public Affairs, and Native American Affairs programs in eight western states. His work has been published in the Farm Journal, Careers and the disAbled, the Journal of Upland Conservation, Fur-Fish-Game, Dakota Country, North American Whitetail, Trapper and Predator Caller, and numerous Midwestern major daily newspapers and professional publications. Sobieck has worked coast to coast—from California’s almond groves, the foothills of the Rockies, the lake country of northern Minnesota and the banks of Maine’s Saco River, yet finds his stories and inspiration under the endless sky and sweeping vistas of North Dakota. Sobieck, his wife, and two Labrador Retrievers reside on their ranch in central North Dakota.
