Deborah Spooner inherited her passion for family history from her grandmother, Harriet Larsen. When the time came to pass on the years of family history, Deborah gladly accepted the challenge. With the combined love of her family and historical events, she took on the project of republishing her Great Grandfather's book. A self-taught artist, she includes original portraits and restored family photographs to bring Colin's story to life. She has a lifelong passion for animals and a "adopt don't shop" motto. She resides in Sacramento, California. Storms and Sunshine of a Soldier's Life was a labor of love. Years of research, hunting for photographs, speaking with family and making new friends all over the world it took over 2 years to get it published. "I'm proud to do this for Colin he doesn't get the recognition he rightly deserves." - Deborah *Lieutenant-General Colin Mackenzie filled multiple journals with his personal and military adventures. His first wife, Adeline Pattle, was one of the notable “Pattle Sisters” of India. She encouraged her husband many times to turn to his faith during their long separations. When tragedy strikes and Colin is left a widower, his faith is tested daily. Adeline’s words embraced him, and his bond with the Lord became stronger. For many years his fellow officers came to him for guidance and strength. With the fall of Cabul from the British hands, Colin is one of many taken prisoner. His religious devotion was well known by then, and he was selected as a negotiator. He risked his life traveling through dangerous terrain in enemy territory multiple times to define the terms of release. After nine months in captivity the prisoners were freed. Colin Mackenzie retired in 1873, and in 1884 his widow, Helen, published his military journals. We are indebted to Helen Mackenzie for sharing the thoughts of a loyal British officer, thoughtful husband, and loving father’s words. Deborah's upcoming project is creating a pre-teen history book series. Book one features Julia Margaret Cameron and Sir Alfred Tennyson. Their collaboration on a new edition of Idylls of the King sealed their friendship in history. By adding Knights, jousting, castles oh my! it's a fun way to look at this time in history.
