Award-winning author Debra Denker has been writing stories since she learned to read. Her novel of Afghanistan, Love and War in the Land of Cain, has won first place in the 2022 National Federation of Press Women Communications Contest, and her cli-fi time travel novel Weather Menders was named Cat Book of the Year in 2018 by The Conscious Cat. Although novels and poetry were her first loves, Denker turned her talent to journalism in the ‘70s and ‘80s, writing about Afghanistan and the plight of Afghan refugees in Pakistan for National Geographic and many leading newspapers. She has specialized in social documentation utilizing journalism, photography, and film to vividly portray the experiences of people in war torn areas, with the intention of creating empathy necessary for humans to stop violence against people and planet. Denker is the author of three published books: the cli-fi time travel novel Weather Menders, a non-fiction literary memoir Sisters on the Bridge of Fire: One Woman’s Journeys in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, and the award-winning novel Love and War in the Land of Cain set during the Soviet-Afghan war of the 1980’s. Denker is Senior Editor of the storytelling multimedia website, Voices for Biodiversity. She currently lives in Santa Fe with her cats Yeshe Gyalpo, and Samadhi Timewalker, but likes to travel frequently in earthly space, and hopes to travel in time and galactic space. Her late cat Dorjee Purr-ba was the inspiration for Georgie, the brave and wise time-traveling cat in Weather Menders who helps humans reverse the ravages of climate breakdown. Please visit the Weather Menders website at www.weathermenders.com, and find out more about Love and War in the Land of Cain at www.loveandwarinthelandofcain.com. Be sure to read Debra's cli-fi blog on subjects from cli-fi in literature, TV and film to the intersectionality of climate justice issues to time-traveling cats.
