Eamonn Gearon is the author of "The Sahara: A Cultural History." He has also contributed to "Meetings With Remarkable Muslims" (2005), "Sahara Overland" (2004 ed.), and "An Encyclopaedia of African History," (2004). He writes for the TLS, London Magazine, Daily Telegraph, History Today, Geographical and the Middle East Magazine, among others. Under the tutelage of bedu in Egypt's Western Desert, Eamonn learnt the traditional skills needed to live and travel in the desert. He fondly remembers his three camels, Osama, Ibn Kelb and Baby, who made his solo explorations of the Sahara possible. A Middle East specialist who has lived and worked from Kabul to Casablanca for the past 20 years, Eamonn uses the uncommon wisdom he has gathered from across the region to promote cross-cultural awareness, better security and mutual understanding. Eamonn is a Professor of North African politics and (in-)security at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), and previously taught at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Lecturing to audiences around the world, he is a regular Distinguished Speaker on the "Queen Mary 2." In the UK, Eamonn has spoken at the Society for Algerian Studies, Royal Scots Society, and the universities of Oxford, London School of Economics and Edinburgh among others. USA speaking venues include Columbia, NYU, Dartmouth and the NDU. The most notable element of all of Eamonn's lectures is the way in which they introduce audiences to the connections between history and contemporary events. Eamonn, a former British Army Officer, helps private sector clients, military and government to operate more effectively in the Middle East. Through his work as an analyst, he is a close observer of Islamist-inspired terrorist groups and the region's state-level armed forces. He writes about Islam, contemporary politics and terrorism for IHS-Jane's Intelligence Group. Eamonn Gearon is the Founder and President of "The Siwa Group." He is an English born Irish man with a home in New Hampshire, an office in Washington DC and an American wife whom he found in the Sahara. www.EamonnGearon.com Twitter@eamonngearon Facebook.com/EamonnGearonAuthor Linkedin.com/in/eamonngearon
