J. Wanless Southwick was a young American in Berlin, Germany in 1961, who personally witnessed human tragedy when a failed socialist government built the infamous Berlin Wall and fences to corral its citizens. After college in Utah, he served in South Korea as a captain in the US Army Medical Service Corps, doing research into arthropod-borne diseases of soldiers and civilians. After his Ph.D. he conducted research into health effects of environmental exposure to pesticides, air pollution, and arsenic in drinking water. He served as president of the Intermountain Society of Inventors and Designers. He taught high school science, trained teachers to use computer technologies, and was a scoutmaster. He served on a city council. In retirement, he and his wife, Jerrie, served together in their local addiction recovery program. They devote energy to their home’s hobby farm and share the garden’s produce with neighbors. They take their family and their religion seriously. His life experiences motivated him to write a book about the purpose of existence. As a grandfather he shared many stories with his posterity including family history and fun fiction, some of which became published books.
