With over 30 years of skating and training experience, Jennifer Matras is a highly sought after skill development instructor and owner of Competitive Edge Skating, Inc (C.E.S.). C.E.S. is the result of Jennifer’s commitment and passion to developing a company where athletes are provided everything needed to reach their highest level of performance. C.E.S. offers innovative on-ice training, specified strength and conditioning training, mental training consultations, and nutritional counseling. As a Nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and an Exercise Physiologist, Jennifer understands the details and high standards it takes for an athlete to reach world class levels.
Born and raised in Redford Township, Michigan Jennifer began skating at the young age of 3 ½. Jennifer trained daily at Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where she had a successful competitive figure skating career. Through 14 years of competitive figure skating, Jennifer accomplished regional championships along with competing nationwide.
Jennifer’s coaching career began at the age of 18 in Michigan helping with the local basic skills program and power skating program but has expanded to working with athletes throughout the country. She continues to focus on semi-private lessons for hockey players from the Mini-Mite level to Professional level but also helps teams throughout their hockey season to develop them into champions.
After many years of providing on ice instruction to hockey players, Jennifer enrolled into the Sports Medicine program at Eastern Michigan University and graduated as an Exercise Physiologist and Nationally Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist in June of 2005. Since then Jennifer and her staff have helped local Varsity, Junior Varsity and AAA teams win many Championship titles.
Throughout the years, Jennifer has helped her students understand the importance and the rewards that ongoing training brings. Jennifer aims to help each athlete move up the ranks with providing unique drills and exercises to work on balance, speed, coordination, agility and over all body control. These key skills enable athletes to dominate in their game, make plays, and become more valuable to their team. Athletes who understand and are willing to put forth the effort required will be players who develop confidence, and more love for their game!
What brings Jennifer the most joy, though, is to not only spend time on the ice helping players become stronger on skates or more powerful in the weight room, but she also likes to help them grow as people. Knowing how important it is to become a better person more than just become a good athlete, Jennifer enrolled in Moody’s Theological Seminary in 2014. Through her combined experiences with figure skating, training with Navy SEALS in her adult life along with classes at Seminary Jennifer has gained some unique life perspectives, coaching skills and the knowledge of putting God first in one’s life. Jennifer uses her platform as a coach to not just build better athletes but better people who know that success is about helping others around you and doing our part to make the world a better place.
Jennifer believes that life begins at the end of one’s comfort zone. Therefore she continues to enjoy challenging herself through training, reading, biking and occasionally looking for adrenal rush with skydiving, rollercoasters or bungee jumping. She also enjoys spending time with friends, family and her dog Roman’s Chapter 12 (named after Jennifer’s favorite chapter out of the Bible.)
