Joan V. Gallos is an award-winning educator, author, and scholar in the fields of leadership, management education, and change and a consultant who has engaged in leadership development and organizational start-up and change projects for private and public organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Gallos currently serves as a Faculty Fellow at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, CA, and as Senior Advisor on Leadership and Education for the Council for the Advancement of STEM Leadership (CASL), Washington, D.C. and to the CASL HBCU Leadership Fellows Program. Prior to Wheelock, she was Professor of Leadership, University of Missouri Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor, and Director of the Executive MBA Program at the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she also served as Dean and Professor of Leadership at the School of Education, Coordinator of University Accreditation, Special Assistant to the Chancellor for Strategic Planning, and Director of the Higher Education Graduate Programs. In addition to her varied roles at Wheelock and the University of Missouri, Gallos has held academic appointments at the Radcliffe Seminars, Harvard Graduate School of Education, University of Massachusetts-Boston, and Babson College, and has taught in executive programs at diverse institutions such as Harvard’s Kennedy School and Graduate School of Education, Notre Dame, University of Copenhagen, Babson, and University of British Columbia. Her scholarship centers on healthy organizations; leadership for a diverse work world; expanding conceptions of what, how and why professionals learn; and change management, including the arts as a vehicle for individual, organizational, and community development. Gallos has received numerous awards for her teaching, scholarship, leadership, and service, including multiple best paper awards, the 2023 David L. Bradford Distinguished Educator Award, the 2017 Lasting Impact Award (from Sage Publications and the Management and Organizational Behavior Teaching Society), the Radcliffe/Harvard University Excellence in Teaching award. She has been named an Icon of Education by Ingram's Magazine and a Sage of the Society by a vote of her international colleagues for lifetime contributions to leadership and management education. Gallos has published six books; more than fifty articles and chapters; and multiple sets of curricular and training materials for the organizational and administrative sciences, including teaching materials for the full Jossey Bass Reader series in management and other best-selling management texts. She also has a co-authored and produced play on teen health and wellness; draft of a book for young readers; progress on her first novel (and fingers crossed for a film or TV mini-series from it!); and a prospectus for a new book tentatively titled "Learning from the Superstars: 8 Rules for Mastering a Life of Creativity, Contribution, and Joy." Gallos has held editorial positions for the Journal of Management Education for nearly 40 years (including as the journal's editor-in-chief), and editorial board appointments to other journals in her field. Dr. Gallos is particularly proud of having served as concept designer and founding director of the Truman Center for the Healing Arts at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City's public safety-net, teaching hospital; and of the ground-breaking Center having received the 2004 Business Committee for the Arts Partnership Award for the best partnership between a large organization and the arts in KC. Gallos holds a bachelor's degree cum laude in English from Princeton and master's and doctoral degrees in organizational behavior and professional education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
