John McManus is the author of three books of fiction: the novel Bitter Milk (2005) and the short story collections Born on a Train (2003) and Stop Breakin Down (2000), all available from Picador USA. In 2000 he won the Whiting Writers' Award following the publication of Stop Breakin Down, and in 2013 he was awarded a Creative Capital literature grant and a Fulbright scholar grant to research and write his new novel about Ugandan gay refugees. His work has appeared in Ploughshares, The Oxford American, Tin House, American Short Fiction, and other journals. He is a professor of creative writing at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and also teaches in the low-residency MFA program at Goddard College in Vermont.
