I am Karen Maharaj. This is my first book. Struck by Reality delves into my spiritual yearning to live awake with reality as it is in front of me. On June 24, 2018 I journeyed out with my friend James to Siesta Key beach. After practicing mindfulness diligently, I felt more connected and conscious with my experience. For the first time, I was fully present as I intended to be in my experience. While we were hustling to get off the beach, we were both struck by lightning. In those moments time stopped. Forced to be mindful because there was no other moment, I was unable to find the words to explain what had transformed in me. From then on, I appreciate being in the moment. I attempted to make sense of being alive, while James, who was standing next to me, had died. It has indeed been a journey of awakening. I believe in my heart that sharing this message was the reason I survived on that day.
