Dr. Lynn Grinnell has been a sustainability management professor since 2009 but came to this profession in a circuitous way. She was in the Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. She became a Master Quality Instructor in the Air Force (i.e., teaching Total Quality Management, which is similar to sustainability management in many ways) and ultimately became the Quality Advisor for HQ 1AF. She has a master’s degree in Organizational Behavior Management and she received her PhD in Instructional Design but, because of her Air Force leadership and management experience, she was given the opportunity to help launch the new Sustainability Management program at St. Petersburg College. She is accredited by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED AP Operations + Maintenance (O+M). Dr. Grinnell tackles the problems of sustainability enthusiastically because, as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church, she believes this planet, with its people, are a gift from our Creator, and we need to be good stewards of creation. Her goal is to bring people together to solve problems, despite political or social divisions. Her attitude come through in her books. To be successful, she says, it’s essential to include people of all political persuasions in our sustainability efforts. The country is pretty evenly divided, politically, but no one wakes up in the morning saying, “I wonder how I can ruin the environment today. I wonder how I can mistreat people.” There is so much we have in common, so many practical solutions available. Hence, for maximum impact it’s important to look for broad participation and acceptance of green initiatives. She provides different ways to frame solutions, giving a wide range of tools that help in reaching all people. So, be prepared to expand your mind and your heart through the process outlined in this book series. And, be prepared to be wildly successful in your efforts to help people and the planet. Lynn lives with her husband, Rich, retired fighter pilot and architecture/sustainability adjunct professor and their therapy dog, Belle, the best dog in the world – half black lab, half golden retriever, with the sweetest temperament ever.
