WHO IS MANGO LANE BOY? I was born on a sunny afternoon on the second day of November in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica. It was a Wednesday, the 44th of that year. For the first 10 years of my life, I was raised by my grandmother. I have a younger sister and an uncle who also lived under my grandmother’s roof. I attended Saint Alban’s Anglican All Age School in the district of Stanmore. At age six, I was walking 2 miles or 3.219 kilometres to school on my own. I had a near-perfect attendance record. After grade 3, I skipped a grade. The work was hard, but I persevered. At the age 10, I left Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica with a one-way ticket to live with my mother in Canada. I ended up in Ottawa, Ontario, where my mother lived. We lived on King Edward which is considered lower-town. We lived in apartment 44, a two bedroom. The number 44 was destined to be my lucky number. After the culture shock and first experiences of racism and about two years of day-to-day racial slurs, I became numb to it and mastered a plastic smile for the racist bastards. In 1976, I took the plunge and became a citizen of this beautiful country, Canada. You guessed it on the 44th day, February 13th. My motto in life is, “Do not allow anyone to let you down, be the best you can be. Whether you are a doctor or a drug dealer, do what you do to the best of your ability. No half-stepping,’ keep your eyes on the prize. All roads lead to death, so enjoy your life.”
