I began writing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction while a university professor in Idaho. Some of my ideas came from hearing friends talk and incorporating those ideas into a story. For instance, in Krystal's Notebook, Uncle Frank moves a wall to increase space in his basement living quarters. My Italian friend told me about his uncle moving across the basement enlarging his space. Krystal's father builds part of a plane in his backyard. A friend of mine built a plane, and I saw it go down the street on a flatbed truck in pieces. One short story, Shadows of Children, published online, takes place in Mexico and came together with three brief scenes written on an airplane napkin. Having known endurance riders in the West, I created a story for my blog, "Dead Goat in the Water Hole," about an endurance rider who is too attached to her horses. Seeing a rug in my sister's home from Aunt Elsie, became Aunt Elsie's Rug, which appeared in Chanteh: The Iranian Cross Cultural Quarterly. Ideas become clues and writing is following the clues you give yourself.
