Pat was born in the mountains of Montana and spent most of his childhood on the high desert plains of Cheyenne Wyoming—home of the oldest outdoor rodeo in the world. He grew up with a love for the outdoors and a passion for sports. After graduating from Montana State University (83), Pat joined the staff of Cru--an international, interdenominational Christian organization. He helped launch and build campus ministries across the country and around the world. After completing a MA in Theological Studies (92), Pat designed and taught an award-winning course in Science and Religion at Montana State University (98). His interest in science and religion brought him to Boston University where he completed an STM in Science and Religion (01) and a Ph.D. in Practical Theology (10) while serving as the Metro Director for Cru Boston. Since 1999, Pat has also worked as a chaplain for Cru at Harvard University. He loves to introduce people to Jesus and help them mature as disciples of Christ. He’s passionate about building transformational communities that transform the lives of the people in them and the lives of those around them. In 2010, Pat co-founded the Mamelodi Initiative (MI)—an organization focused on improving the lives of residents in the townships of South Africa. Thousands of South African youth have benefited from the supplemental educational programs MI offers. The lives of hundreds of American students have also been enriched as a result of experiencing the materially poor, but relational rich, culture of the Mamelodi township. Finally, Pat grew up in a football family. His grandfather, father, uncles, and brothers all played football. His brother even played several years professionally. Pat had a very successful football career of his own. But his relationship with the game was complicated in 2008 when his son Zach suffered a severe traumatic brain injury that nearly killed him and left him with serious physical and mental disabilities. He and his wife, Tammy’s, journey into the world of ambiguous loss is the subject of their book, Hit Hard: One family’s journey of letting go of what was—and learning to live well with what is.
